Institut für deutsche Sprache und Literatur, University of Neuchâtel
The Department of German Language and Literature is a teaching and research institution of Neuchâtel University. It offers BA and MA courses in German language and literature, focusing on non-native students of German. The MA courses are offered in cooperation with other departments of the university and are characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinary orientation, which is unique in Switzerland. The areas of research include, among others, aspects of foreign language learning and teaching. In the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the department carried out a research project on immersive teaching on secondary school level titled “The bilingual ‘Maturität’ in Switzerland. An evaluation of the chances and risks of a pedagogical innovation” (2005-2008; supervision: Prof. Anton Näf). In cooperation with the Jean Piaget secondary school, the department has been an examination centre of the Goethe-Institut since 2004 and offers international certificates of German as a foreign language on various levels.
