LINEE was co-funded by the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission (contract 28388) and was coordinated by the University of Bern. The project started in 2006 and funding of the European Commission ended by November 2010.

LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence) involved 9 European universities and around 80 researchers. It addressed linguistic diversity in Europe, namely in four thematic areas
- Language, Identity and Culture
- Language Policy and Planning
- Multilingualism and Education
- Language and Economy

LINEE aimed to: produce coherent, innovative research results by an interdisciplinary approach, integrate knowledge of partner universities, establish a durable, innovative scientific network, reassess traditional research, and raise the visibility of linguistic diversity in Europe as a key issue in European integration.
