Institute of Translation and Interpreting (IUED), Research focus: Multilingual communication, Zurich University of Applied Science (ZHAW)
The IUED Institute of Translation and Interpreting developed from the former Dolmetscherschule Zürich or DOZ (Zurich Interpreters’ School). Research carried out by the IUED lies at the intersection between translation – understood as language mediation in a broad sense, including both interlingual and intralingual dimensions in their various modalities – and specific fields of application, again in a broad sense, of multilingual communication, i.e. in the working world. Translation studies research at the IUED includes related fields, such as intercultural and multilingual communication, second-language competence, language technology, terminology and technical communication. The IUED works within paradigms of Applied Linguistics. Applied Linguistics is understood as transdisciplinarily oriented linguistics, concerned with both a theoretical and practical focus on real world problems. It identifies, analyses and solves problems, on the one hand through the application of linguistic theories, methods and results, and on the other through the development of new theoretical and methodological approaches.
