The basis of this report, commissioned by the association BERNbilingue, is a systematic evaluation of current studies on French as a foreign language lessons at primary and secondary schools that use the Mille feuilles and Clin d'oeil learning materials. The report aims to compile findings on the following three questions: 1) How well do students in the Passepartout region master the basic competences and achieve the curriculum goals? 2) How do teachers rate the Mille feuilles/Clin d'oeil learning materials and how do they like working with them? 3) How do students rate the Mille feuilles/Clin d'oeil learning materials and how do they like working with them?

Purpose – Expected results: 

A key finding concerns how well students meet the learning goals at the end of primary schooling. The so-called basic competences in listening and reading comprehension defined by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education are mastered by a majority of students (87% and 62% respectively). By contrast, fewer students achieve the more demanding goals set in the Passepartout curriculum (57% in listening, 33% in reading). In both cases, only a minority of students acquire the targeted skills in speaking (42.5% for the basic competences, 11% for the more demanding Passepartout goals). Both teachers and students have mixed opinions of the Mille feuilles tex
