Teaching and learning foreign languages at school under the sign of multilingualism
This project explores the possibilities and limits of implementing multilingual teaching approaches in the foreign language classroom in primary and secondary schools. The objective is to acquire precise understanding of how the various multilingual teaching approaches are applied in the foreign language classroom, but also to gain empirical knowledge about how learners deal with multilingual teaching approaches.
In the first project phase, the foreign language textbooks currently in use in German-speaking Switzerland will be analysed as to gain insight into the multilingual teaching approaches actually used in schools . Subsequently, video recordings will document how the students approach the various tasks; based on the recordings, the learning pathways of the students can be reconstructed. In the final project phase, a selection of recorded learning sequences showing typical ways that students deal with multilingual teaching approaches will form an empirical basis; using this information, interviews will be held with experts to assess the potential and applicability the various types of multilingual teaching tasks have for an actual classroom setting.
