The Swiss Association for Multilingual Education was founded in 1994 after the Forum on bilingual education of the former L2-commission of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK). It is a platform for people working in different domains with various functions: teaching, research, teacher training, school authorities, parents etc., from all parts of Switzerland and the neighboring countries, its main aims being the promotion and development of multilingual education at all levels of education, from pre-kindergarten to higher education, including continuing education. Therefore, the members of the association are committed to different forms of multilingual education (immersion, CLIL, multilingual projects and modules, student exchanges etc.), as well as the theoretical foundations of the different methodologies regarding multilingual education, its efficiency and outcomes. The target languages are the Swiss national languages, English and the languages of immigration. The association organizes conferences and other activities in order to inform and to foster networks and thus promote sustainability of multilingual education.
